Founders’ Day with Purpose – Honoring the Legacy of Kappa Alpha Psi
“Achievement in Every Field of Human Endeavor.”
It’s more than a motto—it’s a mandate. And on January 5th, members of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. proudly honor that mandate by celebrating a legacy over a century strong.
Founders’ Day is a moment to reflect on where it all began, to walk boldly in the present, and to build toward the future with style, purpose, and precision.
The Birth of Achievement – 1911
On January 5, 1911, on the campus of Indiana University, ten trailblazing men created something extraordinary. In the face of intense racial hostility and institutional barriers, they founded Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., determined to cultivate leadership, scholarship, and unity among African American college men.
The Founders—led by Elder Watson Diggs and his distinguished brothers—weren’t just building a fraternity. They were forging a legacy rooted in resilience, excellence, and community uplift.
They called it Kappa Alpha Nu at first—but when the name evolved, the mission only grew louder.
Smooth. Sharp. Unshakable.
To be a Kappa is to carry yourself with intentional excellence. It’s in the way you lead. The way you serve. The way you dress. It’s in the way you move through the world like the room was waiting for you.
From historic leaders and educators to today’s cultural influencers and corporate game-changers, Nupes have always set the bar—and then raised it.
Founders’ Day is a celebration of that consistency. That cool confidence. That unstoppable drive that continues to define Kappa Alpha Psi.
