How to Cut a T-shirt To Make It Cute

May 22nd 2023

Got a shirt you love that’s lacking in the style department? Maybe it's a freebie they handed out at Homecoming, or an old Greek Week tee you don't want to part with, but don't want to wear. Greek Gear is here to help with some easy DIY solutions. Follow along to learn five ways to cut a T-shirt to make it cute and transform your wardrobe of tired tees into pieces you’ll love to wear.

Twist-Front Cut

This cut creates a twisted knot at the front of the shirt, adding a trendy and cute touch. Perfect for plain T-shirts, sorority T-shirts, athletic tees and more.

  1. Lay the T-shirt on a flat surface, such as a table.
  2. Cut a straight line up the center of the shirt, as high as desired, but no more than two inches from the neckline.
  3. Cut and remove the bottom hem of the shirt.
  4. Twist the two sides of the shirt together, keeping the cut line in the center of the twist. You may need to try more than once to make sure the cut line is aligned in the center of the twist.
  5. Tie the twisted sides into a knot.
  6. Adjust the knot to create your desired look.

Off-the-Shoulder Cut

Instantly upgrade any T-shirt with a feminine and flattering neckline. Perfect for summer days or nights out. This cutting technique works best with crew necklines.

  1. Cut and remove the neckline of the shirt, following the seam around the collar.
  2. Cut and remove the sleeves.
  3. Cut a straight line across the shirt, just below the collar on both sides.
  4. Try on the shirt, making the neckline larger as needed so that it naturally falls off the shoulder.

Fringe Cut

Give any tee a bohemian vibe that’s perfect for a music festival or outdoor concert. This cut is the perfect upgrade to a vintage-inspired band tee.

  1. Cut and remove the sleeves of the T-shirt.
  2. Cut and remove the bottom hem of the shirt.
  3. Cut one-inch slits up the bottom of the shirt, spaced one-inch apart.
  4. Stretch each strip of fabric to create a fringe effect.
  5. Cut the neckline of the shirt to create a larger opening and a more flattering shape.

Tank Top Cut

Make any T-shirt into a tank top that’s perfect for warm weather, a day to the beach or an outdoor concert.

  1. Cut off the sleeves of the T-shirt.
  2. Cut a line down the side of the shirt from the bottom hem to just below the armpit. Repeat on the other side.
  3. Try on the shirt and adjust the size of the armholes to your liking.

Crop Top Cut

Create a cute crop top from just about any regular-length T-shirt. Make sure to pick a style with a design that can be cropped.

  1. Try on the T-shirt and decide on a length.
  2. Mark the shirt with a fabric marker at your desired length.
  3. Remove the shirt and cut horizontally at the marked length.
  4. Try on the shirt and make minor adjustments to the length as needed.
  5. Optional: Cut the sleeves off the shirt to make a sleeveless crop top.
