What Does Rushing Mean in College? The Inside Scoop on Going Greek

What Does Rushing Mean in College?

If you've ever heard someone say they're “rushing” this semester and pictured them sprinting across campus with a backpack and a latte, let’s slow down for a second.

In college, “rushing” has nothing to do with running—and everything to do with joining a sorority or fraternity.

So, What Is Rushing?

Rushing is the nickname for recruitment week—a series of events hosted by sororities and fraternities to meet potential new members (PNMs, if we’re using the lingo). Think of it like mutual speed dating, but with Greek letters, sisterhood chants, and probably a lot more glitter.

During rush, chapters get to show off what makes them special—whether it’s their philanthropy work, leadership opportunities, academic support, or just straight-up vibes. And you, the potential new member? You get to see where you feel at home.

What Happens During Rush?

Rush can vary from school to school, but generally, it goes something like this:

  • Open House Rounds – You meet every chapter. Yes, it's a marathon. Wear comfy shoes.

  • Philanthropy Rounds – Learn about the causes each sorority supports.

  • Sisterhood Rounds – Get to know the members and the culture of each chapter.

  • Preference Night – The big one. It’s emotional. There may be candles. Tissues are encouraged.

  • Bid Day – Aka Christmas morning but louder. You find out if you’ve received a bid (an invitation to join a sorority or fraternity), and the celebration is loud.

Do You Have to Rush?

Absolutely not! Greek life is just one of many college paths. But if you’re curious about community, leadership, networking, and matching outfits, it’s worth exploring.

Some students rush their first semester; others wait a year. Some try it and walk away with clarity, others walk away with lifelong sisters or brothers. Both are wins.

What’s the Vibe?

Rushing can be fun, nerve-wracking, magical, awkward, energizing, and exhausting—all in the same 48 hours. The key? Be yourself. You’re not auditioning for a role—you’re looking for your people. And chances are, they’re looking for someone exactly like you.

Final Thought:
Rushing isn’t about pretending to be perfect. It’s about finding your fit. Whether you go Greek or not, showing up with confidence and curiosity is always a good look.

And remember—nobody expects you to know all the chants on day one. That’s what the group chats are for.
